Grandma's Cutout Cookies

Ingredients:

Icing: Directions:
Cookies:
Mix shortening, sugar, eggs and orange extract.

Blend in flour, baking powder and salt

Cover and chill for 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out to 1/8 inch thick. Bake for 6-8 min. Cool on wire racks.

Icing:
With hand mixer, mix powdered sugar, margerine and orange extract. Add milk as needed to make a fairly runny consistency. The icing will harden when it dries.

Add food coloring to tint.

I didn't put time to prepare because it really depends. It does take a good bit of time from beginning to end. The mixing of the dough takes about 10 minutes but the rolling out and baking can take over an hour. The cookies need to cool completely before icing them.

These cookies have been a standby in our family for years. The orange flavoring is a nice change to other sugar cookies. Have fun using cookie cutters and decorating them!
